Grinding and clenching happen mostly while you are asleep, which is why so many people only find out when a dentist points out the flattened edges, the hairline cracks or the worn-down enamel. A night guard puts a thin, custom layer between your upper and lower teeth so the wear lands on the guard instead of on you. It often eases the jaw soreness and morning headaches that come with it.
A sports guard does the same job against a different threat. A custom guard fits closely enough to stay put, speak around and breathe through, which is the real reason players actually wear it. The drugstore boil-and-bite is better than nothing, but it is bulky, it loosens, and it usually ends up in a gym bag.

Common signs are waking with a sore jaw or headache, teeth that feel sensitive in the morning, flattened or chipped edges, or a partner who has heard it. We can usually spot the wear pattern at a routine exam.
Why not just buy one at the drugstore?
A boil-and-bite guard is better than no guard. It is also thicker, less stable and more likely to be left out, and a poorly fitting guard can change how your teeth meet. A custom guard fits closely enough that people actually wear it.
Does insurance cover a night guard?
